Hagrid has had quite the journey with us after arriving as a stray and becoming seriously unwell with Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV), a life-threatening condition. Thanks to emergency surgery, Hagrid made a full recovery. During this procedure, he also received a gastropexy, which permanently secures the stomach in place to help prevent future twisting. Hagrid has shown himself to be an affectionate and loyal boy with his handlers and people he knows. Like many dogs of his breed, he can be protective or vocal when behind barriers, but he settles well once introduced appropriately. He appears to have had limited socialisation with other dogs prior to coming into our care and initially found dog-to-dog interactions challenging, particularly with male dogs. However, he has made steady progress and has formed some positive relationships in the shelter. At this stage, Hagrid would be best suited as the only dog in the home while he continues building his confidence and social skills. Hagrid is house trained but may mark when first settling into a new environment. He has some crate training experience and would benefit from ongoing structure and guidance. Due to his size, strength, and training needs, he is recommended for a confident and experienced handler with Cane Corso or similar large breed experience. He is not suited to a home with cats or children under 12 years of age. For the right home, Hagrid will be a devoted and loving companion.
